Estimate filament use and cost before you print

Upload an SVG or an image, or try the gear. Relieve estimates grams, meters and cost from the infill, walls and material, and updates as soon as you change anything.

How the filament is calculated

A printed part isn't solid: it has walls, solid top and bottom layers, and infill at a given percentage. Relieve works out each of them from the real shape of your part:

  • Walls: perimeter of the part × number of walls × line width × height.
  • Top and bottom layers: inner area × number of layers × layer height.
  • Infill: the volume left inside × the infill percentage.
  • Weight: printed volume × material density. Meters: volume ÷ filament cross-section.

Density and meters per kilogram

Meters of filament on a 1 kg spool, worked out from each material's density.

MaterialDensityMeters/kg (1.75 mm)Meters/kg (2.85 mm)

How much infill changes it

Example: an 80 × 80 × 5 mm plate in PLA, two walls and four top and bottom layers.

Why your slicer shows a different number

  • The slicer adds the skirt or brim, supports and the purge tower, which aren't counted here.
  • Each infill pattern (grid, gyroid, honeycomb) uses slightly different amounts at the same percentage.
  • Top layers depend on the real height of the part, and very flat parts are almost entirely solid.
  • That's why Relieve's estimate usually lands within 10–20% of the slicer: it's for quoting and comparing, not for the last gram.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the cost of a 3D print?

Multiply the grams by your spool's price per kilogram and divide by 1,000. Relieve does it for you: enter the price in the Print menu.

How many meters are on a 1 kg spool of PLA?

About 335 meters at 1.75 mm and about 126 meters at 2.85 mm.

What infill should I use?

15–20% is typical. Go up to 40–50% for load-bearing parts and down to 10% for decorative ones.

Why doesn't it match my slicer exactly?

Because the slicer also counts the skirt, supports and its specific infill pattern. Relieve gives an estimate so you can decide before slicing.

Can I change the number of walls and the layer height?

Yes. In the Print menu you can set walls, line width, layer height, top and bottom layers, filament diameter and price.
