How to turn an image into an STL

  1. Upload the JPG or PNGA phone photo, a scan or a downloaded image all work. The more contrast, the better.
  2. Tune the tracingMove the threshold until the drawing looks clean, smooth the edges and ignore small specks.
  3. Set the size and downloadType the size in mm, add a base or a ring if you like, and download the STL. You can also save the traced SVG.

Which images work best

  • Logos and silhouettes in one color on a light background.
  • Ink or marker drawings, scanned or photographed in good light.
  • Images at least 800 px on a side: at lower resolutions the edges get jagged.
  • Photos of people or landscapes don't work well: the threshold only tells light from dark, not shades.

The tracing controls

ControlWhat it doesWhen to use it
ThresholdDecides which grays become part and which become backgroundRaise it if details go missing; lower it if you get noise
SmoothingBlurs the image slightly before tracingFor jagged edges or grainy photos
Ignore specksDrops shapes smaller than the value, in pixelsFor stray dots or scanner dust
InvertUses the light areas as the part instead of the dark onesFor light drawings on a dark background

Common problems

What you seeHow to fix it
You get a solid plateTick “Invert” or lower the threshold: the background is being read as part
Thin lines are missingRaise the threshold and turn on “Thicken thin areas” under Finish
There are loose islandsRemove them with the Pieces tool, or raise “Ignore specks”
The letters fall apartAdd an outline base to hold them together

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn a photo into an STL?

Yes, if the photo has a clear subject on an even background. For portraits with lots of shades, you'll get a two-level silhouette, not a grayscale relief.

Which formats are supported?

JPG, PNG and WebP. If you already have an SVG, upload it directly: no tracing needed.

Can I download the traced SVG?

Yes. In the Tracing menu, click “Download the traced SVG” to use it in other software or on a cutting machine.

Is my image uploaded to the internet?

No. Tracing happens in your browser and the image never leaves your computer.

What image size do I need?

About 800 pixels on a side is enough for most parts. Relieve traces at 720 px internally so the result is fast.
